JSBMS established in 1976, aims to apply mass spectrometry (MS) for medicine-related sciences and to promote academic development in the fields.

JSBMS has established an authorization system for medical mass spectrometrists since 2013.

JSBMS has become a general incorporated association since April 1, 2015.

We have a lot of members from a variety of fields such as medicine, pharmacy, science, engineering, agriculture, and so on.

1. Promotion of Research and Dissemination of Knowledge
At that time when the society was established, one of major topics was chemical diagnosis of organic acid metabolism disorders with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

With the development of soft ionization methods such as matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI), and electrospray ionization (ESI), it became possible to use MS for precise analysis of proteins.

Further, with the development of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS), capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry (CE/MS), tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and imaging MS (IMS), the application of MS has extended far and wide in the field of medicine and biology.

Recent development of MS has made analysis of proteome and metabolome possible. Thus, MS has become an essential method in medicine-related sciences such as molecular biology and biochemistry.

This society aims to disseminate the knowledge of newly-developed MS methods and to promote the application of these methods to research in medicine-related sciences.

2. Globalization of Society Activity
We published J Chromatogr B special issues since 1996 until 2010 to disseminate our research achievements to the world. Then, we have started to publish Anal Bioanal Chem special issue since 2011.

We continue to provide information on our high-level medical and biological research with MS to the world by contributing to international journals.

3. Social Contribution and Human Resource Development
We contribute to our social life by returning the research achievements to patients and general people to improve their health and welfare.

In order to nurture this society, it is urgently necessary to raise strongly-motivated young researchers.

From the standpoint of gender equality, we support women's research activity in order to make women continue their research.

For those who are not the members of this society yet, I hope that they will become members of JSBMS, and work hard together to produce great scientific achievements.
